An earnest, plodding drama with an intelligent but hardly cinematic screenplay by Gore Vidal, and a couple of fine performances by Anton Walbrook and Donald Wolfit. The main trouble is that Jose Ferrer never really makes the audience care what happens to him.
MIXED
“Strong, if plodding, entertainment.”
(Variety)
ANTI
“A bit of a disappointment, and it flopped at the box office.”
(Winnert)
“Sincere but pretentious.”
(Maltin)
"An antiseptic evoction of the facts, marred irrevocably by his own [Ferrer’s] pretentiously martyred performance."
(Parish & Pitts)
