Slow, stagey drama, sensitively directed and superbly acted. Though the screenplay is in Arthur Miller/ Eugene O'Neill territory, it avoids histrionics and contains notably realistic dialogue. However, it fatally lacks a lightness of touch. It's heavy going for an audience, and many episodes of Steptoe and Son made the same points more entertainingly.
