A violent screenwriter (Humphrey Bogart) is suspected when a girl (Martha Fitzgerald) is murdered.

A thriller which elicited great performances from Bogart - and Gloria Grahame, as his girl-friend who gives him an alibi, yet fears he may be the killer. The whodunit and thriller aspects could have been better written; but the central characters are so well observed and the cynical view of Hollywood so cynical and refreshing, that it's easy to remain gripped. Nicholas Ray directs in the required full-blown, film noir manner. Underrated on release, it has acquired a reputation over the years.
