Survivors of a German torpedo attack recall their lost ship.

One of those war films which can still bring a lump to the throat. This was Coward's finest hour as a screen actor, playing a character closely modelled on his friend Lord Mountbatten, in a film based on the exploits of his ship HMS Kelly. And it was the first film to be directed by David Lean (until then an editor). The underlying message is that even the class-ridden British can band together in time of war: what a shame that peacetime films never seem to reflect the same positive spirit. Voted best picture of the year by the New York Film Critics. |
