Jackie Chan is the Fred Astaire of action movies. Watching him repel aggressors with nothing more than a metal stepladder offers the same thrill as seeing Fred dance a pas de deux with a hatstand. Chan has that much poise, grace and timing.

As usual in his movies, the plot - a mish-mash of sub-Bond spymanship - is knowingly idiotic, impossible to follow and merely an excuse for Chan to show off his action expertise on a snowboard, underwater (pursued by sharks, naturally) and - in a classic sequence - kickboxing on stilts.

The dubbing is as excruciating as ever, but the violence is mild by the standards of Hong Kong movies, and Chan retains the unassuming, country-boy charm that Harold Lloyd used to have in silent comedies. Seeing Chan in action is one of the great pleasures of modern cinema. Stick around for the out-takes at the end, which are funny and oddly heart-warming, as vicious villains abruptly break out of character to express sympathy whenever Chan gives himself a nosebleed.
