A governess (Joan Fontaine, pictured right) falls for her mysterious employer (Orson Welles, left).

Best of the screen versions of Charlotte Bronte's romantic novel, with a handsome, Gothic production, a memorable score by Bernard Herrmann, and loads of atmosphere - George Barnes's deep-focus photography is obviously influenced by the work of Gregg Toland who shot Citizen Kane. Unfortunately, Stevenson directs at too slow a pace, and the cast is variable. Joan Fontaine is disappointingly bland, and appears content to reprise her role from Rebecca. Orson Welles looks the part and has the required intensity, but often seems rushed, mannered or over-the-top. Watch out for a youthful Elizabeth Taylor in one of her earliest screen roles, as the neglected child.
