A top-notch cast for its time (though acting styles have changed and the romantic leads loof a bit stiff), a clever script, efficient direction, and great cinematography by Lucien Andriot combine to make this a classic suspense thriller with darkly comic overtones. It all looks effortless, yet attempts to emulate it have often proved disastrous.
