Frenchmen and Germans work together to save French miners after a pit disaster.

Film which interestingly mixes Socialist realism with German expressionism, still packs an emotional punch, and is generally hailed as a classic. Fritz Arno Wagner's photography is outstanding, as is the art direction. However, the film is naively sentimental and propagandistic; and modern audiences are likely to find it plodding and dull.
