Pretty much the usual mixture of slapstick and sentiment, with rather too much of the latter. Even so, Chaplin's most autobiographical film (his first feature-length work) is among his most touching, thanks to Coogan's natural performance which triumphs over the maudlin material. It made Coogan the biggest child star of the 1920s.
