Highly praised black comedy which would have been helped by wittier dialogue. Even so, it's modestly entertaining and satisfying as the crooks gradually come to grief. Alec Guinness gives one of his most sinister (though not funniest) performances; despite all the famous character actors, the film is effortlessly stolen by Katie Johnson as his landlady nemesis (the role won her a British Film Academy Award). Last of the Ealing Studios comedy films. |
