An Italian aristocrat (Burt Lancaster) can't cope with the rise of the bourgeoisie in the 1860s.
Reviewed by Chris Tookey

Visconti's sumptuous 19th century epic wonderfully evokes the time of Garibaldi, and the emotions of being part of a declining aristocracy. Lancaster, though not well dubbed, gives a memorable character portrait (based, so he said, on Visconti himself). The set-pieces - whether battles, dinners or balls - are all magnificently photographed by Giuseppe Rotunno. Nino Rota's score is one of his best. Avoid the badly dubbed 165-minute version, which also suffers from poor colour.

Winner of the Golden Palm as Best Film at Cannes, it also received an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design.
