The British put down an uprising on the Indian frontier.

Reviewed by Chris Tookey

Rousing adventure with a witty and surprisingly Kiplingesque script, deft characterisation, splendid baddies, exciting action sequences and a fine sense of the British Raj. Gary Cooper (pictured left) gives one of his strongest performances, though Tone (pictured right) has most of the best lines. Second only to David Copperfield in The Film Daily 1935 poll of the US film critics. Ellsworth Hoagland's editing and the art direction of Hans Dreier and Roland Anderson were Oscar-nominated. Assistant directors Clem Beauchamp and Paul Wing won Academy Awards for second-unit direction, although it is in fact rather too easy to see where Hathaway's work ends and theirs begins.
