Anti-authoritarian film often hailed as a classic; it was certainly brave in the context of Weimar Germany. It's all very sombre and symbolic, but remains one of the most sensitive films ever made about Lesbianism, mainly because of Weick's performance, which is far from weak. Remade less successfully in 1958, with Romy Schneider and Lilli Palmer.
