Big, bold blockbuster of its day, with extravagant production and rousing, melodramatic performances - but it does go on a bit, the story is laughable, and March looks an uncomfortable swashbuckler. Gaetano Gaudio's cinematography won an Oscar, as did Ralph Dawson's editing and the score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Leo Forbstein. Despite several hostile reviews, including oone in the influential New York Times, the movie was voted eighth in The Film Daily annual poll of US film critics. |
