| Slow, episodic but still riveting account of growing up in rural poverty. An outstandingly poetic, humane and humorous first feature by a writer-director who, though obviously a product of his own sub-continent, seemed to have more in common with humanistic western film-makers (such as Jean Renoir) than with the Indian movie industry. Though incredibly detailed, it deals with universal emotions and is undoubtedly a masterpiece. The music is by Ravi Shankar. |
