Wedekind’s two Lulu plays are compressed into a silent classic by German director, G.W. Pabst. It's very episodic and the earliest scenes are the best, but it has a cumulative, sexual power. Louise Brooks’s tart who embraces the life-force without caring about morality has to be one of the sexiest performances in the history of cinema. The film has been heavily bowdlerized since its release, and one version even ends up with Lulu and Jack the Ripper repenting their evil ways and joining the Salvation Army! The full version was restored in 1983. It was poorly remade in America as No Orchids for Lulu (1962), starring Nadja Tiller.
