The story of baseball player Lou Gehrig (Gary Cooper, pictured) who died of amytropic lateral sclerosis while at the top.
Reviewed by Chris Tookey
Classic sporting biopic with sincere performances, first-class Oscar-nominated cinematography (by Rudolph Mate) and Oscar-winning editing (Daniel Mandell). There's less baseball footage than you might expect - mainly because Gary Cooper wasn't much good with bat or ball. The tearjerker finale as Gehrig addresses the crowd at Yankee Stadium is the bit that people remember.
