Classic swashbuckler with Colman at his best in a dual role, and Fairbanks and Massey enjoying themselves as the villains. Highlight is a terrific swordfight between Colman and Fairbanks. This is easily the most entertaining version of the novel, although Cromwell's taste for pomp and ceremony slows the action down too much at times. Lyle Wheeler's handsome art direction and Alfred Newman's score were Oscar-nominated. |
