Great cinematography (by Carlo Di Palma), production design (by Santio Loquasto) and art direction (Speed Hopkins); shame about the script, which for some reason was Oscar-nominated, along with the art direction. The screenplay is a shapeless, rambling affair which apes Fellini's Amarcord. (Most of Allen's worst films mimic a European model.) Pleasant and unobjectionable, the movie offers a foolishly rosy view of the past, along with a disappointingly sanctimonious view of the present. |
