A malevolent hunchback (Laurence Olivier) schemes his way to the English throne, but gets his come-uppance.

This is very obviously filmed theatre and the battle climax is a shade disappointing; but here is one of the great Shakespearean performances of all time - Olivier's treacherous, narcissistic but incredibly charming rogue. And, unlike some other star turns that originated in the theatre, he works magnificently in close-up. For those too young to have seen Olivier in his prime on stage, and who have only seen him hamming it up in screen roles unworthy of his talents, this film should come as a revelation. Winner of BAFTA Awards as Best Film, Best British Film and Best Actor.
