A run-of-the-mill, naturalistic plot is given operatic, over-the-top treatment by a job-lot of actors. Delon is embarrassingly awful; Renato Salvatori and Annie Girardot are excellent. The film won Visconti Best Director at Venice, but shouldn't he have insisted on some consistency of acting style? The exceptional cinematography is by Giuseppe Rotunno.
