A no-hoper boxer from Philadelphia (Sylvester Stallone) gets a crack at the world title.
Reviewed by Chris Tookey

A lot of critics patronized this old-fashioned boxing movie, which might have hailed from the Depression era, but was here updated to the depressing 1970s. It's crude and cliched at times, but the sincerity of the performances, zest of Avildsen's direction and message of hope for the little guy against the system made this a box-office winner and created a superstar.

“I wrote the script for Rocky in 3 days. I’m astounded by people who take 18 years to write something. That’s how long it took that guy to write Madame Bovary. And did that ever make the best-seller list?”
(Sylvester Stallone)
