A 12 year-old boy (Shafiq Syed, pictured left) tries to survive on the streets of Bombay.

Grim on the outside, warm on the inside, this is a touching film about Bombay street-life, full of life and character. The little boy is delightfully natural; there's none of the coyness or political tub-thumping with which most western film-makers would tackle this potentially grim subject. A promising debut by Mira Nair, whose experience as a documentary-maker gives the film the unmistakable ring of truth.
