Less than classic remake of Frank Lloyd's 1924 sea adventure. Flora Robson is content to repeat her Goodish Queen Bess from Fire Over England (1937), while Errol Flynn seems to base what there is of his character on his own previous outings as Captain Blood (1935) and Robin Hood (1938). The plot is un-historical as well as formulaic, and there is far too much talk; but when the movie sets out to sea, it's thrilling and lives up to its reputation as a swashbuckler. Erich Wolfgang Korngold was rightly Oscar-nominated for his stirring music, Anton Grot for his art direction.
