Inoffensive - and that's the trouble. The screenplay completely lacks misses the bite and cynicism of Sinclair Lewis's novel. Strong leading performances compensate, but this was a wasted opportunity.

MIXED

Smooth, pleasant but trite.

(Variety)

Quite tolerable but lacking density.

(Halliwell's Film Guide, 2004)

Amusing but forgettable.

(Leonard Maltin, Maltin's Movie & Video Guide, 2004)

ANTI

Feeble.

(Derek Winnert, Radio Times Film and Video Guide, 1995)
