Italian crook-turned-army deserter (Giancarlo Giannini, pictured) is sent to a German concentration camp.

A very odd film, with a Chaplinesque anti-hero scheming his way to survival in a Felliniesque world (Miss Wertmuller had been Fellini's assistant on 8 1/2 ). The leading character is a crook, murderer and rapist, so it is hard to care much about him; all the same, there's something sick about being asked to enjoy his repeated slapstick disasters and sexual humiliations. The critical success of this sadistic piece of grotesquerie strikes me as both baffling and distinctly disturbing.
