Gripping southern drama with more than a hint of black comedy. Cleverly written, directed and acted for maximum sexual tension, it got itself condemned by America's Legion of Decency and thererfore became a big hit. It's proof that one generation's near-pornography is the next's innocent amusement. Boris Kaufman's photography won an Oscar nomination, and Wallach and Torn made their big-screen debuts.
