Entertaining rake's progress with a beguiling central performance. Though scandalous in its day, the film ends up as moralistic: indeed, that's the principal weakness, for the heroine's come-uppance is obviously stuck on as a token gesture. (The censors insisted the ending be reshot before they would grant it a certificate.) The film offers a rare opportunity to see John Wayne in a collar and tie: he looks very uncomfortable.
