Body and Soul, which gets very bitter and discreetly leftish about commercialism in prize fighting, is really nothing much, I suppose, when you get right down to it. But it was almost continuously interesting and exhilarating while I watched it, mainly because everyone had clearly decided to do every scene to a finish and because, barring a few letdowns, scene after scene came off that way.

(James Agee, Nation)

Written with more integrity than usual... and James Wong Howe's shrewd camera elicits more frenzy from the championship bout than newsreels draw from the real thing.

(Stephen Belcher, New Movies)

Betrays an unusual awareness of certain social problems and challenges anyone to disprove the contention that environment is the force that shapes a man.

(Fortnight)
