A far more tense and shuddery affair than it was as John Barrymore's silent picture... Mr March's portrayal is something to arouse admiration, even taking into consideration the camera wizardry.

(New York Times)

Mamoulian was known as an experimentalist and would introduce such ideas in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as voice-over dialogue to reveal a characterís thoughts, dissolves with one scene directly relating to the next and diagonal split-screens with the character in one shot indirectly interacting with the character in the other shot.

(Donald F. Glut, Classic Movie Monsters, 1978)

Not only the most horrific but also much the best of the various versions.

(Ivan Butler, Horror in the Cinema, 1967)
