Starewicz can't be accused of skimping on scale; the cast... includes a raven, a minstrel cat... tightrope-walking mice, grasshoppers, frog choruses...a bear and a cockerel with hen wife and chicks... unrivalled even today in terms of their facility for sheer physical articulation. A shame the same can't really be said of [his] none-too-convincing grasp of filmic narrative.

(Jeremy Clarke, What's On in London, 1993)

Even adults feel queasy before [Starewicz's] grotesque oeuvre... Shot through with adult satire and whimsy.

(Geoff Brown, Times)

As finely tuned yet endearingly rickety as a Faberge wind-up egg.

(Jonathan Romney, New Statesman and Society)
