The yarn is told interestingly enough and imbued with sufficient scientifiction lures and suspense so that only seldom does its moralistic wordiness get in the way... Robert Wise's direction permits the action to drag at times, but is also responsible for the suspense.

(Variety)

Still by far the most ambitious of the recent scientific fantasies... The determination to take the subject seriously reduces the pace and vigour of the film as an adventure story, but it never rises to the level of its own pretensions.
