Pitched in an alien key, bearing little resemblance to his own Japanese classics... as if [Munzak and Kurosawa] were bent upon wooing us with quaintness, not to say cuteness... for a while this is tedious, but ... enlivening incidents are frequent enough.

(Gordon Gow, Films & Filming)

Rescued from the reefs of sentimentality by direction as calmly matter-of-fact in its elegiacs as the best of John Ford... and by Munzak's marvellously apt performance.

(Tom Milne, Monthly Film Bulletin)

The photography is superb but, like the expedition itself, the film moves along at a low pace.

(Ian Christie, Daily Express)
