Roland Joffe
Director, Goodbye Lover (1999)
Goodbye Lover continues the spectacular decline of a once-promising British director. Joffe's wonderful visual talents, demonstrated on The Killing Fields and The Mission, looked as if they might enable him to follow in the footsteps of David Lean. But his delusion that he was a scriptwriter, his taste for hectoring the audience and an inability to control star actors have all contributed to a decline which looks worryingly terminal. Though Joffe's remake of The Scarlet Letter was abysmal, Goodbye Lover is worse.
