Director Jan De Bont had worked as cinematographer on one modern classic of the action genre, Die Hard , and this is on the same high level; it has enough suspense, thrills and humour to satisfy the most jaded sensation-seeker. The plot is implausible but exciting; and one has to respect a screenwriter who can still think of inventive and logical variations on this dangerously hackneyed theme. Speed is not for the faint-hearted. It is a sweat-inducing, nerve-jangling, rollercoaster-ride that leaves your legs feeling as if they're made of blancmange. It more than lives up to its name and reputation. John Wright's editing won a BAFTA award and an Oscar nomination, while the sound and sound effects editing won oscars.
