Two small children in 1940s Spain , Ana and Theresa, watch Frankenstein on a travelling cinema screen, and this infuses their fantasy life, so that they imagine there might be some monster in a remote farm house nearby.

The plot may be reminiscent of Bryan Forbes’s Whistle Down The Wind (the ‘monster’ turns pout to be an army deserter), but the treatment here is far more poetic. Erice’s lyricism more than compensates for the very slow pace.
