One of the most authentic combat films of all time, this is based on the front-line dispatches of a war journalist and noticeably avoids false heroics or jingoism - though not always sentimentality. It follows All Quiet On The Western Front (1930) and predates The Big Red One (1980) and Platoon (1986) in offering a worm's eye view of warfare as confusing, dirty and scary. Mitchum's role as Lieutenant Walker made him a star. The score, by Ann Ronell and Louis Applebaum, and the song "Linda" (music and lyrics by Ann Ronell) were Oscar-nominated.
