H.G.Wells's pessimistic vision of the future, predicting war in 1940, a rocket to the moon and a plague.

| Then, an amazing spectacular: now, a fascinating period piece. Tremendous sets, impressive scenes of devastation, a great score by Arthur Bliss (the first ever to be commercially recorded) and a fine central performance by Raymond Massey (pictured left) make this a landmark British film. The grave weaknesses, which have become even more apparent over the intervening decades, are some stagey, melodramatic acting and a talky, amateurishly constructed script. Lavishly produced by Alexander Korda, it cost over $1.5 million, a huge amount for the time, and eventually made back its money. |
