| A massive film which eye-catchingly re-enacts Macbeth in a Samurai setting. Complaints that Kurosawa seems detached from his subject-matter contain an element of truth. Nevertheless, the two central performances leap triumphantly across the language barrier; and the direction (especially of the action sequences and finale) is by a man at the height of his powers and confidence, mingling Noh, Kabuki and western styles to make a unique cinematic experience. |
