Jury-room melodrama, with Henry Fonda (pictured left with Lee J. Cobb in foreground) winning round 11 jurors to his view of a seemingly open-and-shut case.

It wasn't a hit with a public who may have distrusted its bleeding-heart liberal assumptions; but the critics rightly admired this accomplished directorial debut by Sidney Lumet, who went on to make films such as Dog Day Afternoon and Network - but nothing better than this. It's neat, gripping and much imitated, with a faultless ensemble cast.
