A true story forms the basis of this highly fictional, episodic western which looks primitive by modern standards, but is full of exciting action sequences. Highlights are Beery's dynamic performance, which survives a wobbly accent, and the superb cinematography of James Wong Howe. It was hugely popular, ranked 7th in the Film Daily annual poll of US film critics, and Oscar-nominated for Best Sound (Douglas Shearer).
