No film illustrates better Ford's vision of America as a collection of nationalities, religions and interests coming together to form a common civilization. The plot is episodic, the characters are simple, and there's no John Wayne; but the film has an epic sweep which makes it one of the great westerns. The fine camerawork is by Bert Glennon. The movie inspired the long-running TV series, Wagon Train.

"Along with The Fugitive (1947) and The Sun Shines Bright (1953), I think Wagonmaster came closest to being what I had wanted to achieve."
