Woody Allen changed the sex of the protagonist and re-used the central idea as the basis of his film, Another Woman; but it cant really compare in quality with Bergmans original masterpiece - a profound piece of writing, beautifully performed by 78 year-old Sjostrom (himself a marvellous director). The picture is an arrestingly cruel vision of lifes disappointments, all the more effective for having a warmth and affection often absent from Bergman's work. Winner of Best Film at the Berlin Festival.
