Life and times of an 18th century social climber (Ryan O'Neal).

Gloriously beautiful film which is more watchable (on the big screen, at least) than contemporary critics suggested. It rightly won four technical Oscars (including one for John Alcott's breathtaking cinematography). Thackeray's wit - thanks to Michael Hordern's voice-over - raises a smile here and there; but the two leads (O'Neal and Berenson) are not remotely up to the job; and Kubrick's anxiety to emphasise the cold, uncaring nature of 18th century life becomes tiresome and monotonous. At over three hours, the film is much, much too long. |
