An unstable young woman (sensitively played by Maggie Gyllenhaal) enjoys a masochistic relationship with her sadistic but guilty-about-it boss (James Spader, revisiting his creepy side, exhibited most effectively in sex, lies and videotape, and least likeably in Crash).

Secretary won over-generous reviews because it dares to be different. However, a weird, potentially interesting premise is wasted. Writer Erin Cressida Wilson can't think of ways to develop it. It's based on a short story (by Mary Gaitskill), and the thinness of the material shows through. Director Steven Shainberg is so busy aiming for David Lynchian cool that he fails to involve us in the narrative. The characters aren't believable, or people whom any sentient being would choose to spend time with. Sado-masochism has never been as boring.
