Disney is in trouble after a series of live action flops (Hidalgo, Around the World in 80 Days, King Arthur and, in the States, The Alamo), and this traditionally line-drawn cartoon isn’t going to improve matters. It has failed in the States and ius unlikely to do better here, although I daresay it may make back its costs on video.

It’s a musical western about three heroic but bickering cows (voiced by Roseanne Barr, Judi Dench and Jennifer Tilly) who try to save their farm by tracking down a yodelling cattle rustler (voiced by Randy Quaid) and claiming the reward.

It’s an amiable story with a few good jokes and some serviceable if uninspired songs by Alan Menken; but there’s a fatal lack of pace in the middle section and an overdependency on belching and pratfalls to raise cheap laughs. It is this lack of invention that has led to other studios overtaking Disney in the business of family entertainment that it used to dominate.

The result is a film which will entertain small children for its short running-time, but even at 74 minutes it may leave anyone over 11 checking their watches.
