Bizarrely attacked by the American Christian Right for being pro-gay (it has nothing whatever to say, or even imply, on the issue), this turns out to be a weirdly surreal comedy with occasional, refreshing flashes of wit.

An underwater quest starring an ambitious sponge and a dopey starfish, it runs out of puff well before its 87 minutes are over; but the dialogue, which owes something to The Simpsons, has a certain barmy splendour. It’s a good bet for boys under 12 and none too painful for accompanying adults.
