Austenland is a would-be frothy but hopelessly crude romcom about a young American woman (Keri Russell, pictured) infatuated with all things Jane Austen who goes on a themed holiday in England which promises her the full Jane Austen experience.
Our heroine happens upon a smorgasbord of bad actors overacting horribly in terrible English accents.
Fatally, writer-director Jerusha Hess, who made Napoleon Dynamite, has little or no understanding of Austens strengths and weaknesses. Anyone hoping for a witty spoof or half-way decent romcom will be disappointed.
Theres little sense here, and far too coarsened a sensibility.
