Classic study of a decent man led to his doom by a femme fatale. Dietrich is at her sexiest, with just the right overtone of sadism: it isn't hard to see why the role made her an international star. Jannings's acting is a little exaggerated - he was, after all, from the silent era - but still touching. It was made, and remains available, in both German and English versions. It was remade - badly - in 1959.

"At the time I thought the film was awful and vulgar and I was shocked by the whole thing. Remember, I was a well brought up German girl."
