This promising debut by 23 year-old writer-director John Singleton was over-praised. It is over-long and didactic, while some of the speeches by Lawrence Fishburne are politically naive. But the film is also perceptive, well-structured and makes you feel sympathy for the main characters. The central conclusion (that boys need responsible fathers) is surprisingly conservative from a young man: some may find it sexist, others sensible.
